The people of our country are on the eve of not only a Presidential election but also the election of the often more important components of our political system for our every day lives. However, less relevant to who we elect to office is HOW we navigate this process and the outcomes.
The country seems to be split not as democrats, republicans, and independents but by those who are impassioned to act in lunacy, those who are nauseated by the foulness of the process and those who have become ambivalent to it all. As a one time political science major, I love the history and the excitement of the issues. I am thankful for the great strides in our country's advances. But, I am sickened by how ruthless, hateful and imbecilic so many member of our electorate have become.
In just a few decades, respect and honor have turned into slander and malice. Some may believe this so just a sign of the times, technology, an ever shrinking world view... And I know it is a sign of the times, but of times that have been part of world history from the beginnings. Did we forget that there is nothing new under the sun? Did we forget that we were instructed on how to deal with all of this?
Titus 3:1
"Remind them to be subject to rulers, to authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for every good deed, to malign no one, to be uncontentious, gentle, showing every consideration for all men."
1 Peter 2:13-15
"Submit yourselves for the Lord's sake to every human institution , whether to a king as the one authority or to governors as sent by him for the punishment of evil doers and the praise of those who do right. For such is the will of God that by doing right you may silence the ignorance of foolish men."
Wait, "For such is the will of God that by doing right you may silence the ignorance of foolish men."
That seems so clear. We are supposed to follow the authority that God, our Heavenly Father, appoints for us. W are NOT to malign anyone but to show consideration and praise those who do right.
What a different election this would be if only the believers would follow these instructions. Unfortunately, the believers are often the most vocal and the filled with the greatest malice.
Why?
Passion!
Passion evokes emotion and emotion often is not tempered with love. The problem is, as believers, we are supposed to show our unity with The Lord through His love. If we, decide that our views and their platforms are more important, even when they align with God's Word, then our entire job of showing His love is lost.
Woohoo- the plight of the unborn is heard-- but the redemption of the women in need is gone.
The homeless, jobless and down trodden are put in their place-- but the Word of God is not put into action.
Families are safe as a father and mother- but the love of a Heavenly Father is sacrificed.
Our hate and venom spew and when we hide behind the Word of God, we defame it. We cannot continue to act as the world and expect that the world will see us as set apart as the chosen people of God. What the world sees is hypocrisy.
What do you think The Lord sees? Are our hearts pure when we spread lies about our leaders? Are we innocent when we use people's weakness, failures and mistakes to crucify them publicly? Or are we less guilty because we didn't REALLY know the source?
The sweetest thing is that The Lord does know our hearts and He knows His Word. He expects us to know His Word as well.
Titus 3:1
"Remind them to be subject to rulers, to authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for every good deed, to malign no one, to be uncontentious, gentle, showing every consideration for all men."
If you have never read it before, you now know. Make adjustments accordingly.
In love,
Leigh
